After being evaluated by a doctor, if they find no medical reason for the lack of sleep, the next course of action is medication. There are some excellent medications on the market that help get you to sleep. It’s important to remember that these medications can be dangerous and there have been reports of people sleep walking or even driving while under their influence. Still, if you cannot get the rest you need, it’s an alternative that is something to consider. Ambien, or Zolpidem in its generic form, is a medication that will put most people to sleep within an hour. It can be dangerous when abused, thus, it should be taken with precaution.
Another line of prescription medications that physicians often turn to is the Benzodiazepines. These medications fall into the category of a tranquilizer. They are habit forming so doctors are a little more apprehensive about long term use. The most commonly prescribed in this class are Ativan, Xanax, and Valium. All will bring the sedating factor, as well as calming any anxiety issues that may be underlying. As with the over the counter medication I believe there are better sleep solutions.
